Research that measures what works

Dr. Khoshbin is a surgeon-scientist. Alongside his practice, he leads and contributes to research on how hip and knee replacement and trauma surgery can be made safer, more durable, and better measured.

Clinical Epidemiology, University of Toronto

Trained in the University of Toronto's Surgeon Scientist Program and fellowship-trained at the Hospital for Special Surgery and in orthopaedic trauma in Boston, Dr. Khoshbin brings a research lens to everyday surgical questions: which techniques recover faster, which implants last, and how outcomes are best measured from the patient's point of view.

Focus

What his research looks at

Hip and knee replacement outcomes

Using large registry and health-outcomes data to study how joint replacement performs over time.

The direct anterior approach

Measuring recovery and results for the muscle-sparing anterior technique and the tools used to perform it.

Revision and complex reconstruction

Improving outcomes when a hip needs to be rebuilt or replaced a second time.

Orthopaedic trauma

Complex lower-limb trauma, including pelvic, acetabular, and fractures around an implant.

Patient-reported outcomes

Capturing how surgery affects pain, function, and quality of life as patients experience it.

Quality improvement

Turning evidence into safer, more consistent care pathways.

Current trials

Studies underway

Dr. Khoshbin is senior investigator on international randomized controlled trials. Four are currently recruiting at St. Michael's Hospital, each registered on ClinicalTrials.gov. Several ask a shared question in older patients with a fracture: is it better to fix the bone or to replace the joint?

Recruiting

Fixation versus replacement for a fracture next to a knee replacement (pDIFFIR)

A randomized controlled trial in older patients who break the thighbone near an existing knee replacement, a periprosthetic fracture. It compares fixing the fracture with replacing the implant, to learn which gives the better recovery.

ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT05805774

Recruiting

Fixation versus replacement for a broken lower thighbone in older adults (DIFFIR)

A randomized controlled trial in older patients with a fracture of the lower thighbone (distal femur), comparing fixing the fracture with replacing the knee joint. Run with a co-investigator at Mount Sinai Hospital.

ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT04076735

Recruiting

Fixing versus replacing the hip for a socket fracture in older adults

A randomized controlled trial in older patients with an acetabular (hip socket) fracture, comparing open surgical fixation with hip replacement.

ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT03713853

Recruiting

A steroid injection in the opposite knee during knee replacement (COCASTI)

A randomized controlled trial studying whether a corticosteroid injection in the opposite, non-operated knee improves comfort and recovery for patients having a knee replacement.

In the news

Coverage of his work

Dr. Khoshbin helped bring same-day hip replacement to St. Michael's Hospital, which, as reported by the hospital, was the first in Toronto to offer same-calendar-day discharge for hip replacement, starting in 2018. The program drew national coverage.
